Why We Love It
Sophie Mouse enjoys going to school and playing with her friends. When Owen, a young snake, becomes the new student, Sophie is frightened and must work through her dilemma. This realistic and entertaining story is the first in a new beginning reader series with delightful black and white pictures on every spread.
Follow-Up Fun
- Sophie and Hattie enjoy playing leap frog together. A special thanks to Ann Treacy’s fun project ideas from her blog Doodles and Dots. You can use this pattern to make your own leap frog on card stock:

- Write a letter to Sophie giving her some advice about how she can get along with Owen. Think about your own experiences and what has worked for you when making a new student or friend feel welcome.
- Mrs. Mouse is making a buttercup cake at her bakery. After getting permission, gather some flowers and make your own flower cake using a cut up cereal box or thick paper. Glue the flowers to the top and sides of the cake. Celebrate.
